The Adventures of Sir Kicksalot is a very fitting name for the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic-inspired sandbox action game by solo developer Stéphane Le Roy. You sure do a lot of kicking: punting enemies off cliffs, booting their weapons out of their hands, and even lobbing barrels at them. But there’s a lot more going on than just kicking. After playing the demo for myself, it’s got the bones of an immersive sim, letting you interact with just about anything to take out enemies—or avoid them—in a myriad of ways. There’s direction-based melee combat, letting you attack from specific angles,…
Silent Hill f’s trailer and announcement reception was a bit shaky. On the one hand fans of the series were frothing at the mouth for a new installment in the series, having waited for over a decade for something that wasn’t just a PS5 demo. But on the other, some were unsure whether a Silent Hill game set in Shōwa-period Japan would have what it takes to rival their love of the classics. This pressure followed Silent Hill f throughout its pre-release. It was so bad at points that, after playing the preview at Gamescom, I wrote about how Silent Hill…
Terahertz waves have been an exciting area of research in the past few years because they can be used to examine the internal structures of objects without the risks associated with X-rays. Now one research team has used the tiny waves to peer into the inner workings of transistors while they’re operating, and is exploring whether the technique could be used to read any data stored in a chip.As reported by IEEE Spectrum (via Tom’s Hardware), the multinational research group (comprising engineers from universities in Australia, Germany, and the USA) studied the behaviour of ‘packaged semiconductor devices’ in the low/sub-terahertz…
The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 price is now official. The new flagship AMD CPU that takes its already powerful, 16-core monster, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, and adds a second 3D V-Cache die will set you back a cool $899, making it AMD’s most expensive AM5 gaming CPU to date. This hefty price tag means the 9950X3D2 is $200 more expensive than the 9950X3D, despite AMD admitting during its 9950X3D announcement video that it likely won’t be much faster than that chip in games. Instead, the 9950X3D and 9850X3D are set to remain the two best gaming CPU choices for most.…
There are times when a concept for a game is so goo and the idea behind it is so close to being ready, but isn’t quite there yet. That’s exactly how I feel about Homura Hime. The character designs and concept are great, and the combat can sometimes remind me of action games with parry systems like Devil May Cry and Soulslike, but with NieR sorts of bullet hell elements. The issue is that some more minor elements are keeping it from feeling smooth and stable enough. Especially if you’re on a handheld gaming device like a Steam Deck. So…
Verdict Power, versatility, and looks combine in this ultra-capable, high-end gaming PC. So long as you don’t mind having a PC with a case as large as this one – and if you don’t mind having to jump into the motherboard BIOS to fine tune the fans to run a bit quieter – this is a superbly powerful and well-balanced PC that offers top-tier frame rates out the box while having masses of potential for future upgrades. Pros Hyte Y70 case looks great and cools superbly Fantastic gaming performance Great all round performance Loads of upgrade potential Cons Case is…
The CPU-Z and HWMonitor download pages have recently been compromised, with download links replaced with ones pointing to files infected by malware. If you’ve recently downloaded either of these apps from the CPUID site, you should double-check that the file is of the expected file naming style “hwmonitor_1.63.exe” or “cpu-z_2.19-en.exe” and not “HWiNFO_Monitor_Setup.exe” or some other format. It’s also worth doing a virus scan, though Windows Defender is reported to have flagged the compromised versions of these files. The infected files were first spotted around nine hours ago, with an attacker seemingly having compromised the CPUID download site with these…
In a moment that would make even Lassie and Skippy proud, one Nvidia GPU owner has potentially been saved from a totally destroyed PC, or perhaps worse, by the intervention of their pet cat. Disturbed from some quality time on the loo by the meows of their unnamed feline, the owner was alerted to the smell of their Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 doing what it does all too often: melt power connectors. While it isn’t clear if the GPU cable was truly imminently going to burst into flames, and there are no full-on house fires yet attributed to RTX 4090…
I have too many keycaps. I also own too many watches. I’m a real keycap/watch guy. So picture my surprise when the Miyo Watch Keycap came up on my feed last night. It’s a keycap with an analogue watch built into it. Specifically, a Miyota 5Y20 quartz movement with a dual-tone Super-LimuNova (glow-in-the-dark) dial and hands. Over the top, sapphire glass with an anti-reflecting coating. To the right, a small crown. All of which fits into a tiny 1U keycap—that’s equivalent to a single letter key on your keyboard.I’m definitely late to the game here, as the Miyo went on sale…
Two months ago, Valve released a beta version of Steam that had an option to send anonymised frame rate data, with the general idea being that the information would help improve compatibility and performance on devices using SteamOS. However, one sharp-eyed Steam user has noticed some additions to the latest beta, and these suggest that Valve may well be looking at telling you roughly how fast a game will run on any gaming rig.The user posted their findings at Resetera (via TechSpot), and the details all point to Valve rolling out its ‘Framerate Estimator’ at some point in the near…
